Game Brainstorm

For my brainstorming I thought back to when I was younger and played games on websites on sites like Kongregate or Miniclips, these games where very fun but also where never extremely complicated looking, usually where kept very simple.

My first game idea is that of a game similar to the Impossible game. The Impossible game was a 2D game where the player controlled a block and had the action to either jump over the obstacles of choose not  to jump as it may cause you to die if you do so. The game is renowned for being difficult (as the name tells us) and this factor will benefit me as if the game is very difficult and I am able to  imitate the difficulty, I then won't require a lot of levels in the game as if people can't get past the levels there would be no point in having loads of  levels. Now as you can see from the picture of the Impossible game, that it appears to be 2D, I however will make my game in a 3D format, so using my experience from my unity lessons, I think I'd be able to create a 3D version of the impossible game. I have already thought of how it would work, firstly I'd redo the lessons 1.1-1.3, however I would replace the vehicle with the crate objects so that it will be constantly moving forward, then I will look up how to assign a jump action to the code and that would be it essentially. If I do complete this project I'd hope to learn techniques that I can apply to other games that I could do in the future. I choose this game as it seemed to be the most achievable for someone of my ability and that I actually learn something from completing it and not just watch a video and repeat what was done in it. I only have ever done work on a Unity tutorial but I am hoping that the knowledge obtained from the tutorial will allow me to complete this assignment and do a good job on the game. Another game idea that I would be interested in would be an adventure/puzzle game. My idea is that you would play as a character trapped inside of a room and that you have to click on surrounding objects and interact with them to see if they could be of any use in your escape. Why I chose to this style of game was that when I was younger, these escape room games where one of my favourites to  play, I just enjoyed the idea of figuring out how to escape a place with only the items present in the room with you. An example of the type of game I'd be going for would be the game office escape where you are tasked with escaping from an office space that you are trapped inside of. I would hope to learn more about making this type of game as I find them enjoyable to play and would like to make some of them for myself, also I would find it interesting to see how this type of game compares to the unity tutorial of the car, if there is any similarities or differences between the two. The escape style of games require you to use problem-solving skills to help further you along the game, as well as ingenuity to look around the room and see what possible use could I get from something that was not necessarily designed to be used for such a use, i.e. using a stick and some toilet paper mixed with soap and water so that it gets sticky and reaching for something that is out of reach. So hopefully this project will allow me to fully explore the range that this type of game has. Here is a link which I think will help me Escape room

Another game idea that I thought would work well would be a 3D platformer game maybe like Super Mario 64 or one of the Crash Bandicoot games as I think it would be an interesting challenge for me to try and complete and would be very excited to see if I actual could complete it and if so what that can lead me to do in the future. I am interested in making this kind of game as the majority of games that I play today would fall into the same category and I feel that it will give me a better understand of the games that I love so much, also I would like to see if during the project I enjoy myself so that I will know if I will ever like to work in the game development work sector. Throughout my life I've played many different platformers so I feel I have a decent knowledge of what it should be like and what it shouldn't be like, such as including features in games which I enjoyed whereas I know myself in certain games their could be features which either I failed to understand or that they just don't have any decent use to them. If this idea went well this would be my preferable type of game that I would like to make as I play this type of game the most so I think it would be interesting and fun to see what goes into that type of game, also to see if in fact that I can do it myself. Below is a link which I think will be help to me when making my own version of a 3D platformer and I feel that it can help me with my project a lot. 3D platformer.

My last game idea which I believe will work well is a first person shooter. As this type of game is extremely popular in today's world , I feel that this is a good choice for me to make a I have plenty of experience playing these types of games as well as there being loads of games where I can  take inspiration from. I'm interested in making such a game as I feel that it would be a good experience to see how this type of game differs from my unity project where I made a car move. I would like to learn how such games are made as I have played plenty throughout my life, examples being CODMass Effect e.c.t. I am also excited to learn more about making such a game as first person shooters can have many overall themes that aren't just based upon shooting, Resident evil is a first person shooter while also remaining to be a horror/thriller game too. Even my favourite game of all time can be classified as an FPS, Skyrim as it let's you view the world as the character while using your weapon to attack.  I think I would like to make a hybrid FPS but due to my limited skills I think I'll have to settle for just a FPS. How I plan on creating my own first person shooter is by just keeping it simple, I don't want it to become to fancy so that the attention is taken away from the actual game itself. Hopefully it will be enough for me to do well. Here is a link to a tutorial on how to make a FPS which I believe will be very helpful to me when I make it FPS.

  1. Hey Killian,
Some good ideas you got there, I put fps and a puzzle type game down in my brainstorm too so I see great minds think alike. Id suggest checking out "Escape First" its on Steam, its an escape room game and its a lot of fun I've played it personally and i think it might give you some ideas on what you could add to your own game if you did go down the path of doing a puzzle game.

  2. I like how you have began by telling your readers that you want to create a game that is going to be near impossible and that because it will have such a high skill ceiling that you will only have to design a small number of levels, I think this could definitely make a good game idea for this type of project task and is definitely doable in unity.

Why is the player trapped in the room? i think you could possibly work in some kind of story into your escape room game to give your players a real sense of immersion.
will the player be able to move around the room or only look around ?

For a first person shooter, one suggestion i would have is to think about trying to play with hit-boxes to create a head-shot system by creating a small hit-box on an enemies head with different rules in the script.
