Doing my Game design book

Image
This week for my reading task I had to add some more content to my game design document on the team roles in game design. To start I opened up illustrator to make a graphic picture as requested. I thought about what would be a good thing to make, which related to my topic. I decided to go for an illustration of four individuals representing different roles in the game design team. Each member can be identified by a piece of text above them and a letter on them. Afterwards I added the Author Bio, which was just a few words about who I was, e.c.t. I then posted a picture of myself in the Author Bio section so people can but a face to my name. Once that was done I went through all of my paragraphs, fixing them, by changing the references with the authors and adding the dates in the correct order. This took awhile but I then went on to the bibliography, where I then added the authors name, the date it was published and then the name of the article which I was referencing, I also added...

Reading 08

Image
This week for my reading task I was required to write up an introduction and a conclusion to my paragraphs which I have been working on for the past few weeks. For this task I needed to come up with an introduction that told people what my paragraphs were about and that made them think about what I was writing about, as well as that I had to think of a conclusion which summarised the points which I made in my paragraph, which allowed my to further explain the importance of team roles in the game design. I wanted to further explain how the way things are today may not be as good as they could possible be, for example, I mention the lack of diversity in this industry being a problem as it can lead to complacency in games people make, the more people of differing backgrounds and cultures there are working on something the more it can be influenced by them and add a more personal connection with the people purchasing the game, leading to greater success. After that I just finished up ...

Paragraph review

Image
This week for my reading task, I had to write some feedback to some of my other fellow students on their paragraphs that we all did for our reading task last week. The feedback which I got was mainly consistent of my structure not being sufficient. Where it should consist of five individual pieces of text, each one with their  own specific role, such as an intro, relevant text, the main  piece of information(the "MEAT"), a reference of some kind and a conclusion. Where I had most of the necessary information, I had not written it in the appropriate way. I was also given feedback on how I should speak in my paragraphs as I was speaking about myself in the third person, which was not what our lecturer wanted us to do, instead I should just talk about the information I gathered without mentioning me in the conversation and to also just reference and links or articles instead of saying, "In thee articles that I had read". I also was required to give feedback to the oth...

Main Paragraphs and blog write up

Image
This is an embedded Microsoft Office document, powered by Office . Link to Word For my reading task this week, I had to write five paragraphs, based on the themes I chose in my Analytic Bibliography's. The teams I chose all end up relating to game development and game development team roles. The themes were Teamwork, Minorities, Game development realities, Workplace realities and solved problems/solutions. Each of my chosen themes can somehow relate back to game development team roles, i.e. teamwork is required to work with others. How I wrote my paragraphs was through talking about the theme itself, then referencing articles to do with game development in someway, then further discussing the theme in ways of how it it intertwined with the topic that I chose at the start of the semester, game design team roles. This task was interesting as it let me further look at my bibliography's and think about how each one of them has or doesn't have the themes which I have referenced...

Reflective Analysis

Image
This week for my reflective analysis, I will discuss my work on my Analytic Bibliography's. For this week I had to section of parts of my Analytic Bibliography, highlight them and comment on the highlighted area's. The comments were a kind of brief summary of theme of each section so that I could use them for a latter assignment. This task required me to read through all of my Bibliography's and analysis them so that I could find five overall themes throughout all of them, as my overall project is to do with "Game design team roles", so the themes that recurred with my Bibliography were mainly to do with Team work, which refers to how other people can work together for a common goal. "The minority" which refers to smaller groups of people that represents a sub-group in a specific environment. Workplace and Game development  realities refer to what the real life experience of a workspace or in the game development sector. Finally there was solutions or p...

Unity Tutorial (05)

Image
In this Unity Tutorial I was tasked with creating some basic animation for the  enemy robot and for the player character Rudy. This task was on of the longer ones as it involved me going back and forth in the project window to receive the required animations from the animation folder and then add them to my project. To give an idea of what I needed to do was first take the premade animations in the folder and place them in the animator window so that I could then spread them across the frames. I repeated this process four times in total, one for each direction the robot can face. Then I wrote down some code for the the animation too and pressed play to test it out.  It worked the robot had animation when it walked. Now I needed to do the player animation which was a lot easier as most of it was already done, the only major thing I needed t do was input some code and after that it was all working, both  characters where animated and I had done what I set out to do. I...

Unity tutorial (03)

Image
This week in my unity project I had to decorate the world of my game and include some world interactions-block movement. How I decorated the world was by first adding some metal boxes into the world, edited them so that the  pivot point was in a specific area and such, then I made it into a prefab which allowed for me to now have a finished copy of the box which I was able place as a decoration, I then adjected the box and the character so that when they interreact with one another, it would look natural rather than the character being able to move over the box without any resistant or constraints. Then how I made the world interactions was by first modifying the character controller script to tell it that the main character can collide with chosen objects, but can pass through others. An example of this is the piece of code that I wrote down making it so that all of the tiles that don't have any water on them are able to be walked on with ease, while the tiles that do have water o...

Unity Tutorial 02

Image
In the unity tutorial today, I started my work on my first 2D adventure game. As this was my first time doing a 2D game, there was a need to to set up this game differently from the other 3D games that I made. Firstly I opened up Unity Hub to download the assets that I needed however, this game needed a newer version of unity for it to work, so I installed the newer version and continued to open up the project. As I went through the tutorial, it just covered the layout of the scene and such. Next I started to write my first lines of code of my new project. I downloaded a photo from the tutorial page and made it into a game object, then I wrote some lines of code on it so that it can now move. After that I adjusted the code so that it could move left and right when I input the commands on the keyboard, I also added vertical movement too and made the character move a bit faster. I then focused on the surroundings themselves, which meant I had to create a tile pallet and the split up...

Planning

Image
This week I was given a different reading week task which seemed to be very in depth and require a lot more work than any of the tasks from the last semester, now I'll admit that my internet being dodgy didn't help me understand what was being asked of me, from what I can tell is that I chose a topic to do research on, my topic was game design team roles, which is about the different jobs involved in making a game. With the topic chosen, I continued down the multimedia webpage and read about the ways to go about researching and making a review matrix. I struggled a bit with this so I do plan on asking my lecturer about it when I get a chance, just to clear up some things for me. In the meantime I went off and looked up things about my chosen topic like, what roles a good game design team should consist of, how each individual role is important and why, things like that. As I was still confused over the review matrix I ended up bookmarking some of the pages which I looked at an...

Unity Tutorial 11

Image
Unity tutorial week 11 is the same as week 10  In this unity tutorial I had to make a mouse clicking/shooting game so that when the mouse clicked on a specific object that the object would disappear, while having certain objects be good and having varying scores and a bad object which will deduct points. To start we downloaded the assets from the unity store, dragged the objects from the library and renamed them. We then added components and made then objects into prefabs. Then I created a piece of code so that the objects where thrown up in the air and were kept on a loop so they constantly respawned. I also had to make the objects be destroyed when clicked on. I then had to make a score tracking system so I then imported TMP essentials, renamed the text and wrote some code so that each object had differing value, that an explosion would occur when an object was clicked on. Finally I had to make it so that when a bad object was missed that it would cause  a game over a...

Twitter task 13

Using unity this semester has been a fun and challenging experience, as I started off knowing absolutly nothing, but now have managed to finish several unity tutorials, as well as working on my overall unity project. Game testing

Image
In game development there are different methods that developers use to test the functionality of games, so that before they are placed on sales, they won't face any backlash from fans over buggy games and such. Functionality testing focuses on generic problems with the game or it's graphics & user interface, this includes   game asset integrity, stability issues, audio-visual issues, and game mechanic issues. Combinatorial testing focuses on testing the game at an early stage of it's development, to spot flaws early on. Ad Hoc testing uses randomization to spot any errors present in the game, so the any faults present have a better chance at being seen due to the randomness of this method. Compatibility testing focuses on any faults in relation to hardware, software and the graphics that the game is being run on. Clean room testing ensures the consistency and  reliability of the gaming software. Regression testing works by re-checking  cases so that they can be ...

Growth Mindset

Image
For this week growth mindset challenge I sat down with a friend of mine and asked them about growth mindset. Now I needed to tell that it was for an assignment in college as they were sceptical about the whole thing and weren't really up to doing it. So to start I asked if they had heard of growth mindset already and if so were they applying it to there daily lives. They responded by saying no, so I explained the concept to them which  didn't help matters as they decided to take the piss out of me so from here on the answers won't be great. We went on to talk about how they apply growth mindset in there lives, so they mentioned playing hurling, as when they first started out they could barley hit the ball along the ground, but as years went on they developed more and more skill in the sport until they ended up where they are today. We both agreed that this was an example of them applying a growth mindset to an aspect of their lives, as when they started off they were no cou...

Project

Image
This week I ended up finishing the limb movement of my project, this took a lot longer than I originally  expected as I needed to record each individual limb movement and then once that was done, adjust each part so that the limbs would move symmetrical to the opposite limb. After completing that, I focused my attention on making a useable item. I did this by first importing my chosen item (a Hurley) from blender, I then scaled and and positioned the item proportionally so that it looked natural. After that I put in the code so that it would appear in the characters hand when the pickup was activated. Then I put in the code so that the hurl would be swung like a sword or weapon. So now I had a weapon item, but I wanted to include one more thing before I went on to my next task. I wanted to include a way to shot balls (sliotars) while I was holding the hurl. So I went back to a previous unity tutorial where balls shoot out from a character and thought about how I could alter i...

Game stories

Image
As games have developed overtime, the need for more interesting themes and game types have arisen. What I mean by this is if you look back at earlier generations of games you can see a clear difference when compared to games today, no  it's the the graphics or mechanics it's the story. Games of the past have mainly been about action rather than story, but as they have progressed, the story has become more and more important, as people want further character development, further plot development, e.c.t. After reading the article about how games and movies are both able to tell a story, I  thought about how games can influence other forms of media either through a movie being made about a game or vice-versa or how a game can lead to further plot developments of a movie that were previous unknown, i.e. a specific character's past which wasn't explored in the movie. The article talked about how classical stories move, which when I read it reminded me of a lot of movies and...

Unity Tutorial 09

Image
This week in the Unity tutorials I had to finish the sumo ball game. This involved me having to write code so that 3 enemies would keep spawning in to the game  even if they were knocked of the platform. So after I was able to make the enemies spawn in groups of three over and over, I wanted to increase that number so that it would always increase by one, so if I knock of  the three enemies, four should spawn next. After that I needed to make it so that when the enemies where knocked of the platform that they de-spawn after reaching a certain distance on the Y axis. Now I had to solve the powerup problem as I was left with only one powerup at the very start of the game, so I had to write some code so that a new powerup would spawn at the start of each wave of enemies so that the player had something to fight with. I also had to make it so that there was not loads of powerups appearing on the platform and that they were de-spawning with the new wave. After all these tasks...
